SmartDispense automatically supplies detergent from a bulk reservoir on equipped GE washers. The name covers different systems: identify the full model and tank arrangement before filling, changing settings or adding a manual dose.
Identify the washer and dispenser first
Record the complete model and compare its owner manual with the tank labels, filling port and controls. The year alone isn’t enough: these features appear only on equipped models. GE’s washer SmartDispense, newer Adaptive SmartDispense and FlexDispense, LG ezDispense and dishwasher dispensers don’t share one operating procedure.
Three documented system examples
2016 and older top-load system
GE documents separate bulk tanks for liquid HE detergent and concentrated liquid fabric softener, each holding 130 ounces. Its initial-fill instruction is at least 50 ounces per tank to prime the system. The controls include Detergent Tank On and Softener Tank On.
In this system, an enabled empty tank can prevent starting until it’s filled or bulk dispensing is turned off. Don’t transfer that behavior or priming quantity to a different design.
2017 and newer top-load example
The reviewed GE family guidance describes an approximately 75-ounce liquid-detergent tank without a fabric-softener tank. Its Select control offers Auto, Less, More and Off. Fill only the permitted liquid detergent to the documented MAX mark.
Some cycles don’t allow SmartDispense. GE describes an Off light and a beep when Select is pressed in that state. For this family, the instructions call for detergent directly in the basket on those cycles; verify the actual model before using that placement.
Front-load system introduced in December 2019
GE’s reviewed front-load reference specifies a 50-ounce liquid-detergent reservoir and excludes powder from SmartDispense. Auto, Less and More allow adjustment; this reference defines Less/More as 25 percent below/above Auto.
Tank Low and Loads Left are estimates based on laundry habits. A stated number of loads isn’t a fixed refill interval for every detergent, load or setting.
Choose automatic or manual dosing for the load
- Confirm eligibility: check that your exact cycle permits the bulk system and that the tank contains the approved product.
- For bulk dispensing: use the model’s concentration and amount settings. Keep detergent and softener in their designated locations.
- For a manual dose: first disable automatic dosing as the manual requires, then use its specified manual compartment or basket location and the detergent label’s dose. Don’t assume pouring into the drawer disables the reservoir.
- Before starting: verify the selected dosing mode. Avoid adding a second detergent dose to an enabled automatic load.
GE’s GTW840/GTW845 article permits switching off SmartDispense for specialty soaps and describes optional connected notifications. It also says those series are no longer manufactured and identifies newer dispenser designs separately. Don’t infer that every WiFi washer has the same bulk system or that app connection replaces its owner instructions.
If dispensing doesn’t work as expected
Record the product, tank, selected cycle, dosing setting and alert. An empty-tank response, a cycle that excludes bulk dispensing and actual dispensing failure need different next steps. Use the matching refill or manual-dose instructions before treating an alert as a failed component.
If the wrong product entered a reservoir, pause before running laundry and obtain the exact model’s tank clean-out instructions. Don’t improvise a flush, mix chemicals or dismantle the housing. Repeated foam needs the suds recovery and dosing checks; persistent dispensing failure needs model-specific support.
