For an installed, ready-to-use household washer, check garment permission, sort compatible laundry, choose one detergent route, load without packing, then run the matching cycle and finish the permitted drying method.
1. Confirm the clothes and washer are ready
Read each garment’s washing and drying label. Separate hand-wash-only, dry-clean-only and unidentified items from a machine-permitted load. Check the actual washer’s loading and cycle instructions too.
This workflow starts after installation and any required first-use setup. If the machine isn’t ready for normal use, complete its own commissioning instructions first.
2. Prepare and sort a compatible load
Empty pockets and follow the item’s directions for zippers, hooks, strings and other fasteners. Pretreat a stain only with a method approved for that garment.
Maytag groups laundry by color, fabric and soil level; Whirlpool also calls for compatible cycle and temperature needs. Keep an item requiring a different method out of the load rather than choosing an aggressive setting for everything.
3. Choose one detergent route
Match the permitted detergent type and product instructions to the washer. Use HE detergent when required. Measure for the actual product and load; a capful or one packet isn’t a universal dose.
| Product or system | Placement decision | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Measured liquid or powder | Use the documented compartment or basket route | Exact washer’s product form, dose and loading order |
| Single-dose packet | Whirlpool places it in the tub before clothes, unless the maker expressly directs a dispenser exception | Washer compatibility and packet’s load-based quantity |
| Automatic bulk dispenser | Use its configured dosing route | Avoid a second manual dose while automatic dosing remains active |
Whirlpool directs users to disable bulk dispensing when using packets. Follow the actual model’s documented setting; don’t copy another brand’s button sequence. Handle packets with dry hands and reseal/store them according to their package.
Optional softener, bleach or boosters aren’t required by this workflow. If used, verify each product’s garment compatibility, quantity and dispenser instructions separately.
4. Load without packing
Leave room for the clothes to move and stay within the actual machine’s loading limit. Whirlpool’s top-load guidance uses loose piles around the basket wall and avoids wrapping long items tightly around an agitator.
Use your own front- or top-loader’s documented arrangement. Don’t add an incompatible item just to fill the drum or balance a bulky load. A listed cubic-foot capacity doesn’t approve every garment or load.
5. Select settings and start as the model directs
Choose a cycle, temperature and spin combination permitted by the garments and washer. Check the selected options before starting. A cycle named Delicates, Quick or Sanitize doesn’t by itself establish permission or a particular result.
Close the lid or door and use the machine’s documented start action. If you need to add an item or change a running cycle, use its supported pause/unlock procedure. Don’t force a lock or use an unverified reset sequence.
6. Check completion, then finish drying
Wait for the cycle to complete and the machine to allow normal opening. Remove the laundry and inspect for residue, remaining stains or a care problem before choosing the next action.
Maytag’s drying step sets aside still-stained garments and items labeled for air drying. Keep the actual item’s drying method and heat limits with it; machine-wash permission doesn’t authorize a tumble dryer.
Complete the permitted drying process before storage. If cleaning didn’t resolve the problem, use item-specific guidance rather than automatically increasing heat or detergent.
7. Use a fault route when the machine doesn’t finish normally
Retained water, leaking, severe movement or an error message needs the washer’s safe stop and troubleshooting instructions. Record the full model, cycle stage and exact observation. Don’t repeatedly restart an abnormal load to complete this checklist.
