Lid Switch

Use this page for a lid-closed sensing switch when the model actually has one. A lid switch and a powered lid-lock assembly have different functions.

Confirm whether the lid closes unobstructed

Safety and state. Stop the washer before inspection. Keep hands clear of movement; isolate power before permitted access. Never bypass an interlock or work through water.

With motion stopped, check visible hinges, strike area and trapped laundry. Do not press a hidden switch with a tool or bypass it to run the machine.

Choose the observation that matches

The lid cannot close normally

Remove only loose obstructions. Visible hinge or strike damage needs mechanical assessment before any switch diagnosis.

The lid closes, but the washer reports it open

Record the exact indication and model. Alignment, switch, wiring or control interpretation may be involved; the indication alone does not identify the failed part.

The lid is locked and will not release

Use the model’s documented release behavior. Do not treat a locked lid as proof of a failed lid-closed switch or force it open.

The machine has a combined lock/sensor assembly

Use that assembly’s model record. Do not order a standalone switch from appearance alone.

What this component does

A lid-closed sensing switch reports whether the closure is in the required position for operation. A powered lock also restrains the lid; these functions may be combined in one model-specific assembly.

Before selecting a replacement

  • Match the complete appliance model and suffix to the manufacturer parts record.
  • Confirm the exact component, revision and any documented supersession. Appearance, brand or series name is not compatibility evidence.
  • Obtain the applicable access, installation and verification procedure before buying parts.

Choose the supported repair path

Remove only a loose closure obstruction while stopped. If the lid still reports open, request documented alignment, sensing and wiring diagnosis. If it remains locked, follow the exact release path rather than testing or bypassing a switch.

Confirm the outcome

The relevant symptom is resolved

Record what changed and confirm normal operation using the applicable instructions. A changed symptom does not validate unrelated parts.

The finding is unresolved or recurs

Stop repeated workarounds and get the underlying fault established. Do not order a second part to compensate for an uncertain diagnosis.

DIY difficulty and service boundary

External closure checks are simple; switch access, wiring and testing require isolation and exact service documentation.

What belongs in the repair quote

Verify the failed function and exact assembly before pricing replacement.

Repair decision

Separate a closure/strike adjustment from a verified switch or combined-lock replacement in the quote.

Verify identity before repair

Use the complete model and suffix, exact assembly revision and applicable procedure. Preserve the observations that support the proposed part.
