Motor

Use this page to understand a washer drive motor after the operating state and drive design are known. No motion or a humming sound alone does not establish motor failure.

Record which movement is missing

Safety and state. Stop the washer before inspection. Keep hands clear of movement; isolate power before permitted access. Never bypass an interlock or work through water.

Observe the normal cycle from outside: no agitation/tumbling, no spin, both missing, or an intermittent stop. Note retained water and exact messages before treating this as a drive fault.

Choose the observation that matches

No agitation and no spin

Start, water state, lid/door recognition, control command and drive faults need differentiation. Do not order a motor from this observation alone.

One type of movement still works

Record the working stage. The model’s drive arrangement and control tests determine which parts are implicated.

Humming occurs without motion

Stop repeated attempts if there is overheating or a burning smell. A restriction, drive fault or electrical fault may require service; humming is not a test result.

A motor or brush is listed for sale

Match the motor design and full model. A motor with brushes and a brushless/direct-drive assembly require different parts and tests.

What this component does

The drive motor supplies movement to the drum, basket or agitator through the washer’s particular drive arrangement. A pump motor is a separate function and must not be confused with the drive motor.

Before selecting a replacement

  • Match the complete appliance model and suffix to the manufacturer parts record.
  • Confirm the exact component, revision and any documented supersession. Appearance, brand or series name is not compatibility evidence.
  • Obtain the applicable access, installation and verification procedure before buying parts.

Choose the supported repair path

First record which movements work, whether water remains and whether the closure is recognized. A qualified diagnosis must distinguish the motor from its power/control path and connected drive mechanism. Stop repeated humming or overheating attempts; replace only the verified assembly and required associated parts.

Confirm the outcome

The relevant symptom is resolved

Record what changed and confirm normal operation using the applicable instructions. A changed symptom does not validate unrelated parts.

The finding is unresolved or recurs

Stop repeated workarounds and get the underlying fault established. Do not order a second part to compensate for an uncertain diagnosis.

DIY difficulty and service boundary

Motor diagnosis/replacement involves electrical and mechanical work. No live testing or generic resistance readings are provided.

What belongs in the repair quote

Obtain a confirmed diagnosis and complete quote, including associated drive damage or control work if actually required.

Repair decision

Compare a diagnosed motor repair, any confirmed drive damage and required setup with the installed replacement total.

Verify identity before repair

Use the complete model and suffix, exact assembly revision and applicable procedure. Preserve the observations that support the proposed part.
