Timer

Use this page for a washer that actually uses a mechanical/electromechanical timer or a documented timer assembly. A digital time display does not establish that a replaceable timer exists.

Distinguish the knob from cycle progression

Safety and state. Stop the washer before inspection. Keep hands clear of movement; isolate power before permitted access. Never bypass an interlock or work through water.

Record whether the knob is damaged, a setting cannot be selected, or the cycle stops after selection. Verify the timer/control arrangement in the exact model record.

Choose the observation that matches

The knob turns but the setting does not change

The knob/shaft interface and timer mechanism need separate inspection. A broken knob does not automatically require a timer.

The cycle stops at one stage

Record retained water, fill state and lid/door indications. The timer may be waiting on a system condition; do not infer timer failure.

The displayed remaining time changes

A displayed estimate and a mechanical timer are different concepts. Use the documented control architecture.

A timer is proposed for replacement

Match contacts, connectors, full model and part revision, and require a documented diagnosis before ordering.

What this component does

A timer controls cycle timing on designs equipped with that component. A selector knob, displayed time estimate and electronic controller are different items; not every washer has a separate timer.

Before selecting a replacement

  • Match the complete appliance model and suffix to the manufacturer parts record.
  • Confirm the exact component, revision and any documented supersession. Appearance, brand or series name is not compatibility evidence.
  • Obtain the applicable access, installation and verification procedure before buying parts.

Choose the supported repair path

If the knob fails to select a setting, have its interface inspected before ordering a timer. If the cycle stops, preserve fill, drain and closure states for diagnosis. Replace a timer only after the exact model confirms the assembly and documented tests establish the defect.

Confirm the outcome

The relevant symptom is resolved

Record what changed and confirm normal operation using the applicable instructions. A changed symptom does not validate unrelated parts.

The finding is unresolved or recurs

Stop repeated workarounds and get the underlying fault established. Do not order a second part to compensate for an uncertain diagnosis.

DIY difficulty and service boundary

Timer access and contacts are electrical work requiring isolation and model-specific tests.

What belongs in the repair quote

Separate a simple knob repair from a verified timer or wider system repair in the quote.

Repair decision

Separate a knob repair from verified timer work and the fault in another cycle system. Compare complete confirmed repair totals with installed replacement.

Verify identity before repair

Use the complete model and suffix, exact assembly revision and applicable procedure. Preserve the observations that support the proposed part.
