Washer Agitator Not Working

Use this page when an actual agitator does not move or only part of it works. An impeller washer or missing spin has a different operating context.

Verify the wash action that is missing

Safety and state. Stop for unsafe movement, escaping water or electrical warning signs. Keep hands clear until motion stops. Never bypass a lock or reach power controls through water.

Identify an agitator versus an impeller in the owner manual. Use only observations available during normal permitted operation, with the lid closed. If the design does not let you see wash motion safely, record the cycle result and leave motion comparison to documented diagnosis.

Choose the observation that matches

Only the upper section appears ineffective

An ineffective upper section and an inactive entire agitator need different assembly checks. Verify the exact assembly in its parts record before ordering a kit; the observation alone does not identify a failed part.

The entire agitator does not work

Check the cycle state and whether spin works. Drive, operating-state and control faults need differentiation; this is not a complete gearcase diagnosis.

The washer has an impeller rather than an agitator

Use the model’s documented wash action. Do not treat a missing central post or different motion pattern as a broken agitator.

A large load is not circulating well

Follow the model loading instructions and compare with a suitable load. Poor turnover is not by itself evidence of a failed mechanical part.

Follow the branch to its outcome

If only the upper section was ineffective during normal permitted operation, record that distinction for exact-assembly inspection. If no wash action occurs but spin does, report both functions rather than ordering a gearcase. If neither function works, record water, lock and cycle state for the model diagnostic path. Never hold a lid open or defeat a switch to observe motion.

Check whether the symptom is resolved

The safe external correction worked

Confirm the relevant function under the permitted normal conditions and record the change. Do not continue operation if leakage, unsafe movement or electrical warning signs remain.

The symptom persists or recurs

Stop repeated forced restarts. Arrange diagnosis with the exact model, observations and any message; keep technical test and part selection separate.

DIY or service

Loading and visible external observations are suitable homeowner checks when safe. Cabinet access, electrical tests, heavy lifting, lock release and internal drive work require the exact documented procedure and suitable skills.

Repair or replacement decision

A confirmed upper-agitator assembly repair and a verified drive repair have different scopes. Ask which assembly has failed and whether its repair requires internal access before deciding between repair and replacement.

Compare the complete repair quote with the installed replacement total; include warranty terms and other known faults.

Keep the diagnosis specific

Record the full model and suffix, cycle stage, load, water state and exact message. Keep observations separate from suspected parts.
