Before ordering a heating element, establish which function is affected and which heating system the exact appliance uses. A wash-temperature concern and a washer/dryer’s drying failure can involve different components.
Name the affected cycle function
Record the full washer or washer/dryer identifier, selected cycle and temperature, exact message and whether the concern occurs during washing or drying. Describe what you observed rather than naming a failed element.
Stop for smoke, a burning smell, escaping hot water or electrical warning signs. Don’t repeat cycles to provoke a fault or touch internal parts to judge whether they get hot.
One manufacturer’s sheet separates the systems
Whirlpool’s technician sheet W11300744 Rev. A has a Wash Heating Element test, a separate Wash Temperature Sensor test and separate drying-element and drying-temperature-sensor tests. The heating tests evaluate the element, wiring and control in the covered design.
That distinction matters in an all-in-one: a wash-temperature problem doesn’t identify the drying heater, and poor drying doesn’t establish that the wash heater has failed. This document example doesn’t prove that every washer has either arrangement or establish your model’s instructions.
Ask which finding supports the repair
- The concern is wash temperature: establish the expected operation of the selected cycle and the actual model’s heating and supply arrangement before choosing a component.
- A washer/dryer doesn’t dry as expected: keep the drying-system diagnosis separate from wash heating. Ask which documented findings identify the proposed assembly.
- A quote names a sensor: confirm whether it concerns temperature measurement rather than the heating element itself.
- A message mentions heating: use the model-matched definition and diagnostic path. A system message alone doesn’t establish an orderable part.
Verify the complete assembly and procedure
Ask for the exact illustrated heater or sensor entry, current replacement identifier and any documented supersession for the full model. Confirm required seals, hardware and associated confirmed work with the provider.
Don’t select an element by shape, advertised wattage or another model’s connector arrangement. Keep wash and drying assemblies separate in the quote and retain the source that supports each match.
Keep internal heat-system tests with service
The cited sheet is marked for service technicians. Its internal access and electrical checks aren’t homeowner procedures. Don’t copy resistance values, connector probes, heater bypasses or improvised energized tests from a generic guide.
Request a complete diagnosed repair with required setup, leak or safety checks where applicable and verification of the original function. If the symptom remains after repair, seek reassessment rather than swapping another heating component.
