How to clean a washing machine: choose the correct cleaning method

Clean the washer with its documented empty-tub cycle and separate component-care instructions. Match the product, placement and method before adding any cleaner.

Identify what needs cleaning

Find the exact owner-care instructions and separate tub residue, a dirty dispenser, an accessible door seal and the exterior. A cleaning cycle does not automatically clean every removable part. If the problem is retained water, leakage, severe movement or an electrical warning, stop and use the fault route rather than a care cycle.

Follow the supported tub method

  1. Empty the tub

Remove laundry. Whirlpool’s cleaning guidance calls for an empty tub and checking the washer care guide first.
  2. Match the cycle and cleaner

Identify the documented cleaning cycle and whether it calls for a cleaning product. Samsung’s Self Clean guidance normally requires no added cleaner; follow its applicable instructions and exceptions.
  3. Use the documented amount and placement

Use only the permitted product, quantity and placement for that model and cycle. Do not combine recipes or substitute dish soap, which Whirlpool warns can produce excessive suds.
  4. Finish and check the result

Run and finish the specified operation. Use any documented follow-up or drying step; do not invent an extra chemical or hotter cycle if the result is incomplete.

Clean accessible components by their own method

For a dispenser, match its release and removable inserts to the manual before pulling it out. Not every drawer or agitator cap is removable. Use the documented cleaning and reassembly method; do not pry fixed parts or open the surrounding housing.

Wipe accessible door/seal and exterior surfaces only with a compatible mild cleaning method. Keep access within the owner instructions. A pump filter is a separate retained-water task: not every washer has owner access, and its controlled-drainage procedure must be established before opening it.

Record the result and finish drying

Follow the documented drying or ventilation method while protecting children and pets. Record the date, method, product if any and remaining residue or odor. Use the maintenance record for the model’s stated trigger or interval; this page does not create a universal monthly schedule.

When cleaning does not resolve the symptom

Check that the selected method actually applies to the affected component. Persistent residue, dispensing failure or odor needs the applicable care/support route rather than repeated unverified cleaner cycles. Keep a possible fault separate from routine dirt.

Do not assume a clean smell proves disinfection, sterilization or a resolved mechanical problem. If the prescribed method or safe access remains unclear, pause and ask the manufacturer.
