Remove Pet Hair and Lint From a Washer: Clean the Right Area

Check where pet hair, lint or fluff remains, then use the washer’s permitted accessible-area cleanup. Review what entered the load, keep garment care separate from machine care, and use a fault route for retained water or leakage.

Identify where the hair or lint remains

  • On clothes or blankets: remove loose hair before another permitted wash and check each item’s care label.
  • In the tub or at the door seal: stop the washer and follow its accessible-surface cleaning instructions.
  • With retained water, slow drainage or leakage: use the fault route. Don’t start another cleaning cycle or open an unidentified filter cap.

Don’t reach into a moving washer, bypass a lock or pull retaining clamps to reach hair. Keep children and pets away during any documented drying or ventilation step.

Take loose hair off the item first

Maytag’s pet-hair guidance recommends a lint roller or vacuum on suitable items before washing. Use a method the fabric can tolerate, then follow both the item label and washer loading instructions. Keep excessively hairy items out of the washer until loose material has been removed.

A blanket that fits through the door isn’t automatically a suitable load. If the label excludes machine washing or the washer’s instructions don’t support the item, choose the item’s permitted cleaning route. Don’t repeat washes just to send more clumped hair into the machine.

For lint or fluff, check what entered the load

Before another wash, check pockets and the reachable washer interior for paper, tissues or loose fibers. Whirlpool identifies forgotten paper as one possible source of apparent lint; it doesn’t establish the cause of every residue.

Its top-load lint guide separates shedding towels, rugs and chenille from lint-catching synthetics, knits and corduroy. It also recommends leaving room for movement and notes that new clothing can shed more. Turn an item inside out only when its own care directions permit that preparation.

Use the accessible cleanup and model-matched filter boundaries below for material already in the machine. Don’t label an unknown deposit as lint, mold or mineral scale from appearance alone.

Collect accessible hair or lint before running tub care

Once the washer is stopped and safe access is established, collect loose material from the reachable tub and door area using the permitted care method. Maytag describes damp wiping for accessible tub surfaces. LG’s front-load guidance specifically identifies hair and lint around the gasket and the bottom of the door.

Use your model’s instructions for cleaning and drying those surfaces. Don’t push clumps behind the seal or remove clamps. A visible tear, displaced seal or recurring door leak needs assessment rather than more aggressive cleaning.

Only open a filter after matching its water-release procedure

Maytag identifies the pump filter as a possible place for hair buildup and directs owners to their manual for its location. That doesn’t mean every washer has a user-accessible trap.

If the exact manual identifies owner filter care, follow its isolation, cooling, water-containment, drainage and reassembly steps. LG’s front-load example drains remaining water before removing the pump filter. Don’t transfer that filter location or emergency-drain arrangement to another model.

If access isn’t documented, the cap is stuck or damaged, water can’t be contained or drainage remains poor after supported care, stop and use service. Hair in a filter doesn’t by itself establish a failed pump.

Use the washer’s cleaning method, not an additive experiment

After accessible cleanup, use the exact empty-tub care instructions if cleaning is due. Match any product, amount and placement to that model. Maytag’s vinegar advice expressly requires checking the owner manual; it isn’t permission to add vinegar to every washer.

Don’t combine bleach with vinegar or mix cleaning recipes. A floating collector or a branded pet-hair feature doesn’t replace model-specific care, and this guide doesn’t rank pet-hair washers or promise complete removal in one cycle.

Check the next permitted load and the washer separately

After supported care and reassembly, check that the next suitable load has less carryover and that the washer drains and seals normally. If hair or lint returns, review item preparation and the area where it collects. If water remains, leakage recurs or operation changes, use the matching fault route instead of adding more cleaner.
